Hi, I'm Ligia
Originally from Mexico, I began my professional life as a lawyer before moving to the UK, where I worked as a Social Media Manager. I later helped my husband establish and launch his online antiques business, but after that, I found myself looking for something more fulfilling and meaningful.
Sadly, my beloved dog Nina passed away in 2022. After losing her, I devoted much of my energy to giving my other dog, True, the very best care possible. That journey opened my eyes to just how much there is to learn about dogs and ultimately inspired me to turn my passion for them into a profession.
That is how Velvet Paws Retreat began.
A Family Home
Velvet Paws Retreat is a family business. My husband, John, is an integral part of life here. He is the owner of Beautiful Old England Antiques and works from home, which means he is very much part of the day-to-day lives and routines of the dogs who stay with us.
John shares in their care and enjoys spending time with them throughout the day. He also plays a particularly important role with our stronger and more energetic guests, joining me on walks and helping to ensure that active dogs have the appropriate exercise and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
The dogs who stay with us are not cared for by one person working alone. They become part of a busy but calm family home, where there is always someone around and where their individual routines are an important part of our day.
And then there are Bella and True.
Bella, our Labrador, is young, sociable and wonderfully adaptable, while True, my 16-year-old crossbreed and the inspiration behind Velvet Paws Retreat, brings all the confidence and clear boundaries that come with age.
Their very different personalities are a constant reminder that no two dogs are the same. They also play an important part in our home, helping to create a calm and natural environment for the dogs who stay with us.
